North American Crude Steel Output Rose Marginally in February
The North American region witnessed marginal jump in crude steel output during the month of February this year, says the monthly production statistics published by the World Steel Association (worldsteel). The Feb ’19 output by the region totaled 9.421 million tonnes (Mt), slightly higher by 0.2% when compared with the output of 9.398 Mt during the corresponding month a year before.
The U.S. was the primary steel producer in the region. The monthly U.S. output witnessed 4.6% jump from 6.592 Mt in February 2018 to 6.896 Mt in February this year. The country accounted for over 73% of the total regional production during the month. In second place was Mexico with a total output of 1.435 Mt. The output by the country recorded sharp fall by almost 13% from 1.642 Mt in Feb ’18. Canada too reported notable decline in output over the previous year. The Canadian steel production was down by 6.7% from 1.114 Mt a year before to 1.040 Mt in February this year.
Almost 99.5% of the regional production of steel came from the above three countries.
The steel output during Jan-Feb ’19 totaled 19.733 Mt, marginally higher by 2.8% from the output of 19.196 Mt in the corresponding two-month period in 2018. The primary steel producers were the U.S. (14.414 Mt), Mexico (3.024 Mt) and Canada (2.190 Mt). The U.S. output surged higher by 6.9% year-on-year, whereas the output by Canada and Mexico registered 2.8% and 9.9% decline respectively.
