The funding will be utilized to support the second phase of the Switch Africa Green Project, said Zoltan Agai, Head of Cooperation at the EU.

The European Union has announced its decision to provide Euro 1.2 Million towards funding the electronics recycling initiative in Ghana. The funds will be allocated over a period of four years.

The E-Waste Management in Ghana (E-MAGIN) project, to be implemented in 8 different regions across the country, aims to promote formal recycling of end-of-life electronic waste. The project plans to implement various activities that will build on the tremendous progress made during the initial phase of the Switch Africa Green project- the UNEP and EU funded project implemented in six African countries including Ghana . The initiative, led by the University of Cape Coast (UCC) is being implemented in collaboration with Ghana National Clean Production Centre (GNCPC), City Waste Recycling Company Limited in Ghana and Germany-based Adelphi Group.

Ghana’s Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Prof. Kwabena Frimpong Boateng welcomed the funding. The Minister noted that projects such as E-MAGIN Ghana will promote healthy environment in the country through systematic and proper management of e-waste. Further, it would result in effective implementation of the Hazardous and Electronic Waste Control and Management Act passed by Ghana’s parliament in July 2016. The bill aims to provide for the control, management and disposal of hazardous, electrical and electronic waste.

The funding will be utilized to support the second phase of the Switch Africa Green Project, said Zoltan Agai, Head of Cooperation at the EU. It will help to provide training to stakeholders working in the sector so as to spread awareness among public on the mounting e-waste menace in the country. EU will closely monitor the implementation of the project in various regions, Agai added.
