U.K. Plastic Bottle Recycling Touched New Record in 2017
Only four local authorities lack kerbside collection service that includes plastic bottles.
The latest statistics published by RECOUP-a plastic recycling charity, suggests significant increase in the number of plastic bottles being recycled in Britain during the past year. As per statistics, 351,907 tonnes of plastic bottles were collected from households for recycling in 2017. The collections hit new record, registering a jump by 2.5% over the prior year. This is the biggest increase in collection in three years.
According to RECOUP report, the UK consumes approximately 13 billion plastic bottles every year. Out of this only 7.7 billion bottles are collected for recycling. This translates to only 59% of the total consumption. The data also indicates a collection rate of 33% for plastic pots, tubs and trays. The RECOUP survey finds that more than 96% of bottles are recycled in Norway, thanks to successfully implemented bottle deposit scheme.
The report cited steady progress in efforts to boost collection of plastic bottle for recycling in the UK. Only four local authorities lack kerbside collection service that includes plastic bottles. However, efforts are already underway to have a service in place by next year itself, the survey said. Interestingly, kerbside services of nearly 80% of local authorities have plastic pots, tubs and trays included in them.
The RECOUP statistics underline the need for a deposit scheme, said industry experts. It also calls for improved recycling infrastructure in public areas. Only around half of the local authorities currently provide recycling bins on streets or open places.
